Brown Clee Burn

A demanding 11k run through some of Shropshire's most stunning countryside

Our 12th event will take place on
Sunday 21 September 2025.

Click on the ENROLMENT tab above to find out more about the event
and to sign up through Entry Central next time

Many thanks to all of you who took part in our 11th Event on 1 September 2024. You all helped to make it a fabulous day. We had 82 runners on the day and the event went brilliantly, thanks to the calm, settled weather and the dedication of our many helpers.

The Committee would like to extend its thanks to all those who made this such a successful event:
the caterers, the marshals at the start, around the course and at the finish, those who set up and those who cleared away, the photographers, those who registered the runners and produced the certificates, the Village Hall committee, those who made generous donations and all others who gave their time.

Details of the funds raised will appear in due course, as will a full report in the West of the Clee magazine.

Photos and timings from the 2024 race appear in the tabs above.

See you again next time!

Record Numbers for the Burn

“A million ‘thank-you’s from us for a brilliant race, please pass on our thanks to all your fellow organisers, marshals, chefs and volunteers.  It’s such a great event, a huge challenge. Agonising and exhilarating in equal
measure.”
That is just one example of the many messages we have received following the latest Brown Clee Burn 11k run, held on Sunday 18 September. Yet again, we had a beautiful day’s weather, with the sun shining, a gentle breeze (although not so gentle apparently, on the top of the hill), with a moderate temperature. Ideal for running I am told. Although some of the ladies in the kitchen were working in very hot conditions.

The run commenced at precisely 11am following a minute’s silence in memory of the Queen, whose funeral was of course on the following day. 113 runners of various ages set off, although there were 14 who had not managed to make
it to the event, but who kindly donated their entry fees, rather than requesting a refund. Much appreciated!

The overall winner was Ludlow runner, Oliver Perratt who achieved a commendable time of 43 minutes 49 seconds, while the fastest female was Sarah Cordingley from Welshpool, in a time of 58 minutes, 58 seconds, also a
very, very good time.

Then there were the two ladies, from Coreley and Cheddar respectively, who came in joint last in 112th position, with a time of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 37 seconds. They received what was undoubtedly the loudest cheer of the day. As
a non-runner, I have to say, a fantastic effort by every single one who took part.

Talking to two of the runners afterwards, who had not previously entered, they were full of how well the whole thing was managed and how friendly all the marshals and helpers were. They fully intend to persuade other runners from
their club in Cheddar to take part in next year’s run, which will be the 10th anniversary of the first time we held the Burn.

Which brings me, yet again, to the most difficult part of this article. That of trying to make sure I thank absolutely everyone involved. Not just the runners themselves, but my fellow committee members, Ashley Smith, Carol Hindes,
Julie and John Knowles who put in so much work in the months leading up to the day itself, together with our Head of Catering, Jill Perks. As I have said in previous years, the list of people to thank is huge and almost impossible to include every name. Somewhere in the region of 50 people play their part, mostly from Stoke St Milborough itself, or at least with past connections to the village. Named or nameless, you all played your part and
should be rightly proud of yourselves.

There are also our sponsors who I won’t embarrass by naming, but we are very grateful for their financial help, along with Walls Butchers and Waltons Bakery who both provide their excellent food at a very good price, and Radnor Water who supply a bottle of water for every single runner at the finish, free of charge.

At the time of going to print, it is too early to say the amount raised, but hopefully I will be able to tell you that in next month’s magazine, along with details of the donations made to local charities and other good causes, including Midlands Air Ambulance. All I would say is that it is clear this was the most successful Burn to date.

Thank you to everyone.

The Best Burn To Date

On the morning of 5th September, someone asked me which Gods I prayed to for good weather, as yet again the weather was lovely, with blue skies and a very pleasant temperature. That was for the resumption of the Brown Clee Burn 11k Run, after a Covid induced break of two years. I wasn’t aware I had actually prayed, but maybe I did subconsciously, because the sun was certainly shining after a very wet August.

Anyway, thanks to everyone involved, the run was the most successful since we first started in 2013. If I attempt to thank every one of our sponsors, suppliers, marshals, catering ‘staff’, photographers and many other helpers along with my fellow committee members, I would be guilty of unintentionally missing someone out. Nevertheless a definite huge thank you to one and all.

However, a special thanks must really go to Ashley Smith this time, who, despite being extremely busy as a teacher, joined our committee and set up our new website, linking it to Entry Central, our new online system for run entries. This gives us a great advantage as it alerts runners to the Brown Clee Burn, when they enter similar runs elsewhere.

And so it proved, with a record number of entrants. Congratulations must go to the first finisher, Oliver Perratt from Ludlow Runners, and to Monica Baptista, the first female finisher, but also to every single runner who took part. Oliver’s time was 45 minutes and 54 seconds, while Monica’s was 60 minutes and 26 seconds. A fantastic effort by both!

It never ceases to amaze me how so many runners can be so cheerful, smiling as they approach the finishing line. Every runner reached the finish of what, as most of you know, is a very tough course. Maybe they were smiling simply because they had reached the end (I don’t think it was because of my jokes on the PA system). Of course, as many of you will have seen from the photo’s taken around the course, there weren’t too many grins on the hill itself. Having said that, the comments we have received, both verbally and online, have been so complimentary about the friendliness and helpfulness shown by all involved. Oh, and they really enjoyed the bacon and sausage baps too.

As a result of everyone’s efforts, working as one great big team of volunteers, we have been able to make donations totalling £1,200 to the following good causes:

Midlands Air Ambulance
Stoke St Milborough Village Hall
Oak Farm Trust
Blackford Chapel
St Milburga’s Church (towards essential gutter repairs)
St Milburga’s Bells Project (towards computer teaching equipment)

That is a record total of donations for the Burn and of course much of it has come from outside Stoke St Milborough and the immediate surrounding area, which is a bonus. So well done to all!

Finally, we definitely intend staging the Burn again in 2022, so please make a note on your calendars for the first Sunday in September.

Arrangements regarding COVID-19

If you are thinking of entering our tough but great run, you may have concerns because COVID is still with us. We are determined to keep everyone, including our fabulous helpers and marshals, as safe as possible on the day. So we have set out a few basic rules, for when you are inside the village hall.

Firstly, unless you are medically unable to do so, please bring a mask to wear when registering, or collecting your delicious sausage or bacon bap (Vegans are also catered for). Sanitiser will be provided (for your hands, not your food. There will be sauces too, of course!)

Numbers will be limited in the hall at any one time, to avoid crowding by the registration desk and also at the food serving hatch. Please observe appropriate social distancing and respect any signage or verbal instructions and guidance given at the time.

There will be a one-way system in operation, with entry via the main front door and exit by the side door, with the tea and coffee station near the exit. This system will apply for registrations, food collection and for the use of the toilets.

Please don’t hang around in groups in the hall itself. If rain is forecast, we intend to have a couple of gazebos outside, so you should be able to eat your food without getting wet.
